Two types of superpowers
Economic and military
Arms Race (Cold War)
America and USSR competed for superiority in the development and accumulation of weapons.
Space Race
This started when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957. The Soviets also put the first person is space. The U.S. responded by creating NASA and spending more money on science and space technology.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Set up to lead America’s effort to go to space.
Peace Corps
Federal program established by President Kennedy to send volunteers to help developing nations.
Ho Chi Minh
Vietnamese nationalist and communist leader who led Vietnamese troops against the Japanese in World War II, the French until 1954 and South Vietnam & U.S. until his death in 1969.
U-2 Incident (1960)
U.S. spy plane piloted by shot down over the Soviet Union during a spy mission. At first the U.S. lied about the mission, but later told the truth when the Soviet Union had parts of the plane and the pilot alive.
Fidel Castro
Communist leader of Cuba.
Bay of Pigs Invasion
Failed invasion of Cuba in 1961 when a force of 1,200 Cuban exiles, backed by the United States, landed at the Bay of Pigs.
Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)
When the U.S. discovered Soviet nuclear missiles on Cuba, President John F. Kennedy demanded their removal and announced a naval blockade of the island. The Soviet Union agreed to the U.S. demands a week later and the U.S. agreed not to invade Cuba.
