Week 2 Flashcards
Issues arising from scientific management:
It shows the rise of formally rational organisations
These organisations might be dehumanising
It assumes humans are lazy and only motivated by economic rewards and penalties
What was the Schmidt Experiment?
To do with Social Management: 75 men could each move 12.5 tons of iron per day but Schmidt could move 47.5 using the scientific method and recieve 60% more wages. But only 1 in 8 workers could reach the same level.
What are some Neo-Human Relation Theories? (Think Hawthorne Experiment)
McGregor - theory x and theory y
Maslow - The Hierarchy of Needs
Both try to combine HRT and SM into one
What does Theory X assume and imply?
It assumes people natural dislike work, prefer direction, lack ambition and want security
It implies control, coercion, direction, threats, economic incentives
What does Theory Y assume and imply?
It assumes people naturally enjoy work, prefer autonomy, want responsibility and challenge
Implies self control, consultation, involvement and recognition (incentives)
What does maslows hierarchy of needs consist of?
You need to satisfy these in order to reach self-actualisation: Physiological (pay for food etc) Safety (security) Belonging (sense of comraderie) Esteem (being valued) Self actualisation (enlightenment)
What was the conclusion of workshop two?
Organisation theories are not universal
They are rooted in specific social, cultural and economic context across time and space
The future is relying on management students to intuitively interpret
