15
Q

Bacterial causes of brain abscess?

A

Streptococci (60-70%), staph aureus (10-15%), anaerobes, gram negative enteric bacteria.

16
Q

Complications of brain abscess?

A

Raised ICP, coming, rupture into ventricles

17
Q

Cause of subdural empyema?

A

Steptococci, anaerobes, strep pneumoniae, haemophilus influenzae

18
Q

Where does subdural empyema come from?

A

Sinuses, middle ear, mastoid

19
Q

Main cause of viral encephalitis?

A

90% = HSV1 - VZV, EBV, CMV, measles, adenovirus, influenza, rubella, HIV.

20
Q

Clinical features of viral encephalitis?

A

Different from meningitis - fever, headache, meningism, altered mental state, +/- focal neuropathy - seizures, weakness, dysphasia, CN palsy, ataxia.

21
Q

Investigations in viral encephalitis?

A

EEG - abnormal temporal lobe activity, CSF same as viral meningitis.

22
Q

Treatment for viral meningitis?

A

Aciclovir - mortality high despite treatment - some have neurological sequelae.

23
Q

Acute disseminated encephalomyelopathy?

A

Immune mediated CNS demyelination. Follows viral illness or vaccination.
