Describe the nature and location of the temporomandibular joint
A synovial joint between the head of the mandible and the mandibular fossa on the under surface of the squamous part of the temporal bone
How is the temporomandibular joint separated?
Into an upper and lower joint by a fibrocartilaginous disc attached around its periphery to the inside of the capsule.
What is atypical about the TMJ?
There is no hyaline cartilage
What muscle contributes to the interior of the TMJ and how?
The upper fibres of lateral pterygoid contributes fibres to the anterior margin of the fibrocartilaginous disc
What are the attachments of the fibrocartilagenous disc of the TMJ?
Anteriorly attached near the head of the mandible (moves) and posteriorly it is attached near the temporal bone and is immobile.
