Using a pronoun for an understood noun
I see Martin, Lisa, Tina, and Carol
I see them
In Spanish this is best seen when descriptive or qualative adjectives become pronouns.
In English we add the word one
He has the green apple and I have the red one
In Spanish the adjective assumes the entire meaning of the noun.
Él tiene la manzana verde y yo tengo la roja.
The adjective retains the number and gender of the ommitted noun.
………as well as the appropriate definite article. (el, la, los, las)
He reads the big book and I read the small one.
Él lee el libro grande y yo leo el pequeno.
I like the blue tie but you like the the red one.
A mí me gusta la corbata azul pero a ti te gusta la roja.
You wear black shoes and I wear white ones.
Tú llevas zapatos negros y yo llevo los blancos.
We paint the enormous pictures and they paint the very small ones.
Nosotros pintamos las pinturas enormes y ellos pintan las muy pequeñas.
He buys new cars but I always buy used ones.
Él compra coches nuevos pero yo siempre compro los usados.
She prefers tall men but I prefer short ones.
Ella prefiere los hombres altos pero yo prefiero los bajos.
They want the easy question but we want the difficult one.
Ellos quieren la pregunta fácil, pero nosotros queremos la dificil.
She thinks that the blond man is handsome but I prefer the brunette!!!.
Ella cree que el hombre rubio es guapo pero yo prefiero el moreno.
The blue foutain pen is yours but the green one is mine.
La pluma azul es tuya, pero la verde es mia.
Every client wants to buy a luxury (de lujo) car, but buys the compact one.
Cada cliente quiere comprar el coche de lujo, pero compra el compacto.
More people buy the grey carpet (la alfomba) because the white is always dirty.
Más personas compran la alfombra gris porque la blanca siempre está sucia.
The two dresses are beautiful, but the long one is more elegant.
Los dos vestidos son hermosos, pero el largo es más elegante.
