First Aid & The body (8 cards)
What is the purpose of the respiratory system?
Exchanging gases - Oxygen and carbon dioxide
Transportation of oxygen into the blood & carbon dioxide out of the body
What is the purpose of the circulatory system?
Moving blood round the body
Transporting oxygen around the body with haemoglobin
Immune response - WBC
Describe the components of blood
Plasma - liquid component of blood, yellow in colour
Platelets - colourless fragments that help blood clotting
Haemoglobin - protein in red blood cells, responsible for carrying oxygen in the blood
White blood cells - help with immune responses
Red blood cells - hold haemoglobin to transport oxygen, main component of blood
Water - acts as a solvent to dissolve nutrients in the blood for easy transportation
What are the components of the heart?
Ventricle - bottom chambers
Atria - top chambers
Valves - between ventricles and atria, prevent blood from flowing the wrong way
Coronary artery - main blood supply to the heart
Pulmonary artery - takes blood to the lungs to be oxygenated
Aorta - transports oxygenated blood to the body
Vena Cava - takes deoxygenated blood to the heart
What are the components of the lungs?
Trachea - main tube to the lungs
Bronchi - tube into each lung
Bronchioles - smaller branches of bronchi, divert into each lung
Alveoli - sacs in which gas exchange occurs
Summarise the role and responsibilities of a first aider
Secure the area, make it safe, ensure the injured person is comfortable and being looked after, provide adequate first aid
Describe how to establish consent to provide first aid and CPR
Ask the patient
Ask a person accompanying the patient
Keep the patient informed of every process/action undertaken when performing first aid
Act in the patients best interests
