Summarise the scope of practice for a dental nurse

What is a montgomery patient centred-approach to consent?
The patients must be aware of any and all risks associated with the treatment being proposed
What is valid consent?
The patient must be able to make a decision on their treatment having been given all of the relevant and necessary information required - including risks, the nature, the purpose and success rate/longevity
What does GDPR mean?
General Data Protection Regulation
We must handle data in a professional and confidential manner. We must be able to explain what data we collect, why and how we store it.
It allows patients to have full lawful control of their own data.
Describe how patient confidentiality is maintained
Patient information is only accessible to those who require it.
All digital systems are password protected.
Paper documents are stored in lockable containers in a lockable rooms.
Private conversations are held in private rooms
Patient information isn’t discussed with other staff members if not necessary
What does safeguarding mean?
The process of protecting individuals, particularly children and vulnerable adults from abuse, harm, and neglect.
What are the responsibilities of a dental nurse when safeguarding patients?
Make the DSL aware of any concerns so they can be reported and acted upon.
Ensure all patients are kept safe from harm and protected from danger
Phone calls/ welfare checks on vulnerable patients when needed
Explain the importance of maintaining up-to-date, complete and accurate patient records
Medical information - possible changes that can interfere with treatment planning
Changes in address/ contact details - ensure patient is still contactable
What is Gillick competence?
A patient under the age of 16 is able to give full, informed consent if;
They are able to understand the problem,
They can understand that it requires treatment to correct the issue
Be able to understand the consequences of both undergoing treatment or declining it
Be able to communicate their decision - not necessarily verbally
