Alcestis
Ἄδμηθ᾽, ὁρᾷς γὰρ τἀμὰ πράγμαθ᾽ ὡς ἔχει,
λέξαι θέλω σοι πρὶν θανεῖν ἃ βούλομαι.
ἐγώ σε πρεσβεύουσα κἀντὶ τῆς ἐμῆς
ψυχῆς καταστήσασα φῶς τόδ᾽ εἰσορᾶν
θνῄσκω, παρόν μοι μὴ θανεῖν ὑπὲρ σέθεν,
ἀλλ᾽ ἄνδρα τε σχεῖν Θεσσαλῶν ὃν ἤθελον
καὶ δῶμα ναίειν ὄλβιον τυραννίδι.
Admetus, you see my affairs holding in this way,
I want to tell you, before I die, the thing I wish.
Having honoured you as an elder and arranged for you to go on living instead of my life, I die. It is possible for me to not die on your behalf but
but to have a man of Thess, whoever I wanted,
and to dwell in a happy house in royal power.

But I did not wish to live, torn from you, with our children fatherless, I didn’t spare them, having the gifts of youth in which I took pleasure. and your father and mother betrayed you, it having come to them to finely put aside their life, and could have saved their son by dying gloriously.

For you were their only child, there being no hope to have another child when you died. Both you and I could have lived the rest of our time together, and not you sighing, having been made alone by your wife, and looking after our orphaned children. But a certain god held it to be brought about in this way.
εἶεν: σύ νύν μοι τῶνδ᾽ ἀπόμνησαι χάριν:
αἰτήσομαι γάρ σ᾽ ἀξίαν μὲν οὔποτε
(ψυχῆς γὰρ οὐδέν ἐστι τιμιώτερον),
δίκαια δ᾽, ὡς φήσεις σύ: τούσδε γὰρ φιλεῖς
οὐχ ἧσσον ἢ ‘γὼ παῖδας, εἴπερ εὖ φρονεῖς:
Oh well, now be mindful to be greatful to me of these things.
For I don’t ask you for gratitude of equal worth- for nothing is more valuable than life- I will ask for just things, as you will admit. For you love our children no less than I do, if you indeed have good sense.

τούτους ἀνάσχου δεσπότας ἐμῶν δόμων
καὶ μὴ ‘πιγήμῃς τοῖσδε μητρυιὰν τέκνοις,
ἥτις κακίων οὖσ᾽ ἐμοῦ γυνὴ φθόνῳ
τοῖς σοῖσι κἀμοῖς παισὶ χεῖρα προσβαλεῖ.
μὴ δῆτα δράσῃς ταῦτά γ᾽, αἰτοῦμαί σ᾽ ἐγώ.
Hold them up as masters of my house and don’t marry a stepmother for these children, she a worse wife than me and may strike our children with an unfavourable hand. Therefore (then) don’t do these things, I beg you.

for stepmother, having come, is an enemy to the children already there, she is no more gentle than a viper. A boy has his strong father to be a great defense. But you, my daughter, how will you leave your girlhood well? What sort of a stepmother will happen to your father? Let her not cast bad rumours onto you, and, in the prime of your youth, destroy your marriage.

ὑμῖν δέ, παῖδες, μητρὸς ἐκπεφυκέναι.
For your mother will never arrange your wedding some day, or encourage you in childbirth, where nothing is more comforting than a mother. For it is necessary for me to die. It is not into tomorrow and not the three days, that holds this bad thing, but straightway I will be said to be around those no longer present. May you be joyous and prosper, it is possible to you husband to boast to having had the best wife, and my children, to be born from the best mother.

Admetus:
These things will be as is shall be, don’t worry. Since I held you, both in life and having dead, you alone will be called my wife. And no Thessilean bride will ever address me as husband. There is none of either so noble parents, or as beautiful in form.

Enough of children, I pray to the gods that benefit happens from them, as I did not benefit in you. I will bear your grief not for a year, but as long as my lifetime endures, o wife. Hating my mother, and hating my father, for their love was in their words but not their deeds. You saved my life by giving in exchange the most precious things of your life. Is it proper to me to sigh, having lost such a wife as you?

If there was to me the voice and song of Orpheus,

ἀλλ᾿ οὖν ἐκεῖσε προσδόκα μ᾿, ὅταν θάνω,
καὶ δῶμ᾿ ἑτοίμαζ᾿, ὡς συνοικήσουσά μοι.
ἐν ταῖσιν αὐταῖς γάρ μ᾿ ἐπισκήψω κέδροις
σοὶ τούσδε θεῖναι πλευρά τ᾿ ἐκτεῖναι πέλας
πλευροῖσι τοῖς σοῖς· μηδὲ γὰρ θανών ποτε
σοῦ χωρὶς εἴην τῆς μόνης πιστῆς ἐμοί.
But at any rate wait for me, whenever I die,
And prepare a house, so that you can live with me.
For I will implore these people to place me in the same cederwoods to you

Yes, I will bear this wretched grief for this woman with you, as a friend for a friend.

Oh children, you yourselves have heard your father sayings these things,
That he won’t marry another woman in charge of (lit. over) you nor dishonour me.

And I say now, and will fulfil this.
