I have come, sympathising with you misfortune, child. For you have lost the best and wisest wife, no one can deny. But these things are necessary to bear although they are hard to bear. Receive these ornaments and go down into the earth. Her body is needing to be buried, for she died on behalf of your life, child, and did not make me childless nor allow me to waste away from old age in mourning clothes, deprived of you. She made life more glorious for all women, having undergone this noble task.

You came to this funeral not from my request and I do not say your presence is in friendship. This woman will never put on your finery, she will not be buried lacking any of your things. It was then that it was necessary for you to share my grief when I was dying. You stood to the side and and allowed another, a young person, to die, you being old, you will mourn this corpse? So then, you were not properly the father of this (my) body, nor she who claims to have birthed me and called herself my mother actually gave birth to me, but of some slave’s blood and put under your wife’s breast.

Having come out to the test, you have shown the sort you are, and I don’t believe me to have been born your son. Look, you stand out cowardly from everyone, since you are of such an old age (being) having arrived upon the end of life, you were not willing and not brave enough to die for your son, but you and your wife allowed a foreign woman (to do so), so I would consider her alone my mother and father. And yet you could have competed this fine contest, dying before your son, and in any case, the life to you remaining to be lived was brief. And I and this woman would be living the (my) remaining time and I would not be lamenting my troubles, having been made alone.

and truly/indeed, as much as it is necessary for a prosperous man to have, you had. You had the prime of your life ruling, I was your child, successor of this house, so that, having died childless, you were not fated to leave your house to others to be torn apart. And at least you can’t say that you handed me over to die, because I dishonoured your old age, for I was the most respectful towards you. in return of these things, you and the women who bore me gave to me in exchange grace/thanks such as this. Therefore, you would no longer be ahead/should anticipate planting children, who will feed you and, when you have died, will dress and lay out your body.

The misfortune before us is to be borne, let us go and place the corpse on the funeral pyre.
