ξένοι, Φεραίας τῆσδε κωμῆται χθονός,
Ἄδμητον ἐν δόμοισιν ἆρα κιγχάνω;

Heracles- Strangers, inhabitants of this land of Pherae, do I find Admetus at home?
Chorus- the son of Pheres is at home Heracles. But tell us, what need sends you to the land of Thessaly so as to this town of Pherae?

Τιρυνθίῳ πράσσω τιν᾽ Εὐρυσθεῖ πόνον.

καὶ ποῖ πορεύῃ; τῷ συνέζευξαι πλάνῳ;

Θρῃκὸς τέτρωρον ἅρμα Διομήδους μέτα.

πῶς οὖν δυνήσῃ; μῶν ἄπειρος εἶ ξένου;

ἄπειρος: οὔπω Βιστόνων ἦλθον χθόνα
Heracles- I am doing a certain job for Tyrian Eurytheus.
Chorus- and to where are you going? To what journey are you committed to?
Heracles- (I am going(implied)) after the 4 horse chariot of Thracian Diomedes.
Chorus- but how will you be able? Surely you are not ignorant of the host(master?)?
Heracles- I am ignorant, I have not yet gone to Bistonian land.

Chorus- it is not possible that you should master the horses without a fight.
Heracles- but it is in no way possible for me to refuse the task.
Chorus- in that case, you will, having killed them, return or remain there dead.
Heracles- this is not the first contest of my undertaking.
Chorus- what benefit would you get by conquering the master?
ουκ έστιν- έτσι with infinitive: it is possible

Heracles- I will carry away the foals to the Tythian king.
Chorus- it is not easy to put the bit to their mouths.
Heracles- (yes it is easy) unless they blow fire from their nostrils.
Chorus- but they tear men apart with their nimble jaws.
Heracles- you are speaking about food of mountain beasts, not horses.
Chorus- you will see troughs splattered with blood.
Heracles- of which father do the brought up child claim?
Chorus- Ares, the lord of the light shield from golden Thrace.

καὶ τόνδε τοὐμοῦ δαίμονος πόνον λέγεις
(σκληρὸς γὰρ αἰεὶ καὶ πρὸς αἶπος ἔρχεται) εἰ χρή με πᾶσιν οἷς Ἄρης ἐγείνατο μάχην συνάψαι, πρῶτα μὲν Λυκάονι,αὖθις δὲ Κύκνῳ, τόνδε δ᾽ ἔρχομαι τρίτον ἀγῶνα πώλοις δεσπότῃ τε συμβαλῶν. ἀλλ᾽ οὔτις ἔστιν ὃς τὸν Ἀλκμήνης γόνον τρέσαντα χεῖρα πολεμίαν ποτ᾽ ὄψεται.
Heracles- this work you speak of is my fate - always hard and tends to get quite steep - if it is necessary for me to join all those born of Ares in battle, first Lycion, then Cycnus, I go to this third contest to fight this master and his horses. But there is no one who will see the son of Alcmene tremble at hostile hands.

Chorus- indeed, Admetus, the king himself of this land, is coming out from the house.
Admetus- greetings, son of Zeus and descendant of Perseus.
Heracles- and greetings to you, Admetus, king of Thessaly.
Admetus- if only I could, but I know you mean well.
Heracles- but why are you wearing the cropped hair of mourning?
Admetus- I am about to bury a certain corpse on this day.

Her- God, keep misfortune away from your children.
Ad- The children I brought forth are living in the house.
Heracles- your father was of the right age, if indeed he is dead.
Admetus- that man is, and so is the one who birthed me, Heracles.
Heracles- indeed, not your wife has died?
Admetus- there is a double story to tell about her.
Heracles- did you speak of her having dead or living still?
Admetus- she is, and she is no more. It grieves me.
Heracles- I know nothing more. For you are speaking without mark(significance).
Admetus- do you not know of what destiny it was necessary for her to suffer?
Heracles- I know she undertook to die instead of you.

τί δῆτα κλαίεις; τίς φίλων ὁ κατθανών;

ὀθνεῖος ἢ σοὶ συγγενὴς γεγῶσά τις;

πατρὸς θανόντος ἐνθάδ᾽ ὠρφανεύετο.
Admetus- how then, is she still (in existence) if indeed she promised that?
Heracles- don’t mourn your wife, put off to thing(time).
Admetus- the one about to be dying has died and is no more.
Heracles- Being and not being are thought to be seperate.
Admetus- you think this, Heracles, and I think that.
Heracles- then who are you lamenting? Which of your loved ones has died?
Admetus- (it is) a woman, the woman just now mentioned.
Heracles- someone who happens to be an outsider or family?
Admetus- an outsider, but otherwise she was an essential part of the house.
Heracles- how then did she lose her life in your house?
Admetus- as her father had died, she was raised (as an orphan) here.

εἴθ᾽ ηὕρομέν σ᾽, Ἄδμητε, μὴ λυπούμενον.
Ἄδμητος
ὡς δὴ τί δράσων τόνδ᾽ ὑπορράπτεις λόγον;
Ἡρακλῆς
ξένων πρὸς ἄλλων ἑστίαν πορεύσομαι.
Ἄδμητος
οὐκ ἔστιν, ὦναξ: μὴ τοσόνδ᾽ ἔλθοι κακόν.
Ἡρακλῆς
λυπουμένοις ὀχληρός, εἰ μόλοι, ξένος.
Ἄδμητος
τεθνᾶσιν οἱ θανόντες: ἀλλ᾽ ἴθ᾽ ἐς δόμους.

αἰσχρὸν <δὲ> παρὰ κλαίουσι θοινᾶσθαι ξένους.</δὲ>

χωρὶς ξενῶνές εἰσιν οἷ σ᾽ ἐσάξομεν.

Heracles- oh dear! If only I had not found you mounting, Admetus.
Admetus- with what doing are you stitching this word?
Heracles- I will carry on to the hearth of another friend.
Admetus- that is not possible, my lord. May such a big misfortune not come.
Heracles- guests are vexing to mourners if ever they come.
Admetus- the dying ones are already dead, come into the house.
Heracles- it is shameful to feast in the presence of friends who are mounting.
Admetus- the guest room, to where we will lead you, is separate.
Heracles- let me go and I will bear endless thanks to you.

οὐκ ἔστιν ἄλλου σ᾽ ἀνδρὸς ἑστίαν μολεῖν.
ἡγοῦ σὺ τῷδε δωμάτων ἐξωπίους
ξενῶνας οἴξας τοῖς τ᾽ ἐφεστῶσιν φράσον
σίτων παρεῖναι πλῆθος, εὖ δὲ κλῄσατε
θύρας μεταύλους: οὐ πρέπει θοινωμένους κλύειν στεναγμῶν οὐδὲ λυπεῖσθαι ξένους.

τί δρᾷς; τοιαύτης συμφορᾶς προκειμένης, Ἄδμητε, τολμᾷς ξενοδοκεῖν; τί μῶρος εἶ;
Ἄδμητος
ἀλλ᾽ εἰ δόμων σφε καὶ πόλεως ἀπήλασα
ξένον μολόντα, μᾶλλον ἄν μ᾽ ἐπῄνεσας;
οὐ δῆτ᾽, ἐπεί μοι συμφορὰ μὲν οὐδὲν ἂν μείων ἐγίγνετ᾽, ἀξενώτερος δ᾽ ἐγώ. καὶ πρὸς κακοῖσιν ἄλλο τοῦτ᾽ ἂν ἦν κακόν, δόμους καλεῖσθαι τοὺς ἐμοὺς ἐχθροξένους. αὐτὸς δ᾽ ἀρίστου τοῦδε τυγχάνω ξένου, ὅταν ποτ᾽ Ἄργους διψίαν ἔλθω χθόνα.
Admetus- it is not possible to go to another man’s house.
(To the slave)
Lead this man to the (having been) opened guests rooms that are out of sight, and tell the people standing (in charge) to set out a multitude of food. And shut the inner door. It is not right for the guests who are feasting to hear mornings nor for guests to grieve.
Chorus- what are you doing? A tragedy such as this set before you, Admetus, do you dare to receive guests? Why are you stupid?
Admetus- but if I had driven a friend, having arrived, from my house and city, would you applaud me more? Indeed not, since my misfortunes would (happen) in no way be lessened and I would be inhospitable. I find him the best host, whenever I went to the thirsty land of Argos.
αὐτὸς…ξένου- lit. I meet with this best host.

πῶς οὖν ἔκρυπτες τὸν παρόντα δαίμονα, φίλου μολόντος ἀνδρὸς ὡς αὐτὸς λέγεις;
Ἄδμητος
οὐκ ἄν ποτ᾽ ἠθέλησεν εἰσελθεῖν δόμους,
εἰ τῶν ἐμῶν τι πημάτων ἐγνώρισεν.
καὶ τῷ μέν, οἶμαι, δρῶν τάδ᾽ οὐ φρονεῖν δοκῶ οὐδ᾽ αἰνέσει με: τἀμὰ δ᾽ οὐκ ἐπίσταται μέλαθρ᾽ ἀπωθεῖν οὐδ᾽ ἀτιμάζειν ξένους.
Chorus- but why did you hide your present bad luck, him coming as a a friend, as you say?
Admetus- he would not have been willing to enter my house, if he had known any of my troubles. And, I expect, I seem to someone to not think in doing this, and in no way approve. But my house does not know how to reject nor dishonour a guest.
