Admetus- she is, and she is no more. It grieves me.

Heracles- I know nothing more. For you are speaking without mark(significance).

Admetus- do you not know of what destiny it was necessary for her to suffer?

Heracles- I know she undertook to die instead of you.

Admetus- the one about to be dying has died and is no more.

Heracles- Being and not being are thought to be seperate.

Admetus- you think this, Heracles, and I think that.

Heracles- then who are you lamenting? Which of your loved ones has died?

Admetus- (it is) a woman, the woman just now mentioned.

Heracles- someone who happens to be an outsider or family?

Admetus- an outsider, but otherwise she was an essential part of the house.

Heracles- how then did she lose her life in your house?

Admetus- as her father had died, she was raised (as an orphan) here.

Admetus- the guest room, to where we will lead you, is separate.

Admetus- it is not possible to go to another man’s house.
(To the slave)
Lead this man to the (having been) opened guests rooms that are out of sight, and tell the people standing (in charge) to set out a multitude of food. And shut the inner door. It is not right for the guests who are feasting to hear mornings nor for guests to grieve.

Chorus- what are you doing? A tragedy such as this set before you, Admetus, do you dare to receive guests? Why are you stupid?

Admetus- but if I had driven a friend, having arrived, from my house and city, would you applaud me more? Indeed not, since my misfortunes would (happen) in no way be lessened and I would be inhospitable. I find him the best host, whenever I went to the thirsty land of Argos.

αὐτὸς…ξένου- lit. I meet with this best host.
