3 Flashcards
Types of endotracheal intubation
- Nasal or oral intubation
Preferred means of bypassing upper airway obstruction and
allowing free entry of air to the trachea
Endotracheal intubation
Device that measures the amount of CO2 in inhaled or exhaled
breaths
Capnometer
Positive pressure machine which delivers moistened or nebulized
air or oxygen to the lungs under enough pressure and with
appropriate timing to produce artificial, periodic inflation of alveoli
Assisted ventilation
Rely on the elastic recoil of the lungs to empty the alveoli
Assisted ventilations
Possibility for children with a chronic respiratory illness
Lung transplantation
May involve a single lung, or it can be done in conjunction with a
heart transplant if respiratory disorder had caused the ventricular
hypertrophy of the heart
Lung transplantation
Congenital obstruction of the posterior nares by an obstruction membrane or
bony growth, preventing a newborn from drawing air though the nose and down
into the nasopahrynx
Choanal atresia
Most frequent infectious disease in children
Acute nasopharyngitis
How many days does acute nasopharyngitis incubation period?
2-3
Caused by rhinovirus, coxsackie virus, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, and
parainfluenza and influenza virus
Acute nasopharyngitis
Infection and inflammation of the throat
Pharyngitis
Types of pharyngitis
- Viral pharyngitis
- Streptococcal pharyngitis
Sore throat, fever, general malaise, enlarged lymph node, erythema at
the back of the larynx and palatine arch, increased WBC
Viral pharyngitis
Streptococcal pharyngitis is cause by
Group a betahomolytic streptococcus
Bright red back of the throat and palatine tonsils, enlarged tonsils with
exudate in the tonsillar crypts, petechiae on the palate, high fever, sore
throat, difficulty of swallowing, lethargy
Streptococcal pharyngitis
Infection of the lymph nodes that drain the nasopahrynx behind
the posterior pharynx wall
Retropharymgeal abscess
Infection and inflammation of the palatine tonsilsg
Tonsilitis
Infection and inflammation of the adenoid tonsils
Adenitis
Nosebleed
Epistaxis
Occurs as a secondary infection to streptococcal, staphylococcal, or H.
influenza organisms
Sinusitis
Infection and inflammation of the adenoid tonsils
Adenitis
Nosebleed
Epistaxis
Causes of nosebleed
Lack of humidification
Trauma
Strenous activity
