3.16 Chromatography Flashcards
(6 cards)
How chromatography work?
separation depends on the affinity for mobile or stationary phase
Thin Layer chromatography
Runs fast
Plates are robust
Plate is coated in silica gel- stationary phase
Solvent is mobile phase
How do you calculate Rf value?
distant moved by solvent
Column Chromatography
silica packed in tube- stationary phase
solvent, mobile phase is ran through tube
allows for silica to be used multiple times
allows for collection of individual constituents
Gas Liquid Chromatography
stationary is a powder packed capillary tube
mobile is an inert gas
Different components leave tube at different times- retention time
accurate detectors used
GCMS
Gas Liquid Chromatography with a Mass Spec attached
