What are the possible soloutions to racial disadvantage in sport/physical activity?
- Publishing & punishing severly any racial abuse
- Organisim campaigns aainst racisim in sport
- Training more ethnic minority coaches, teachers & sports leaders & educating them on the effects of stereotyping
What is the ‘Rooney Rule’?
- Made by Wayne Allison who was first black asian minority project manager
- Requires national football teams in USA to interview candidates for ethnic groups for head coaching & senior football operation jobs
- Has been viewed as successful in opening up doors for minority coaches
What barriers are there for the underrepresentation of women in sport?
- Lack of time & money (disposable income)
- Stereotypical myths are still evident in society e.g. belief women lack ‘aggression’ for sports like rugby
- Less media coverage
- Less role models
- Negative impact of school P.E programmes e.g. rules on kit/lack of appealing choice of acitivities
- Lack of fitness, low levels of self confidence, body image issues
- Fewer leagues/competitions/clubs avaliable for women to participate in
What possible solutions are there to gender inequality in sport?
- Increased sponsorship to attract womens sport
- Increased media coverage of womens sport
- Enocurage shared childcare/domestic responsibilities, creating more leisure time for women to devote to sport
- Encourage greater accpetance of women having jobs/careers w more disposable income giving increased financial independance
What are the health benefits of raising participation?
Help protect individuals from a range of health problems:
- Decreased risk of heart disease/stroke
- Avoidance of high/low blood pressure
- Decreased risk of type 2 diabetes
- Maintaining a healthy weight- Decreased risk of obesity
- Improved mental health & stress management
What are the fitness benefits of raising participation?
- Improved posture
- Improved cardiovascular fitness
- Improved msuclar strength/endurance
- Improved flexability
- Improved agility
- Improved speed/power/reaction time
What are the social benefits of rasising participation?
- Raise levels of chemicals e.g. serotonin & endorphins- have a calming effect, make person feel happier/better about themselves
- Improved sleep patterns result from participation in regular exercise
- Boost in mood
- Increase in social & emotional health
What is sport England’s overall mission?
- To create a ‘sporting habit for life’
- It works w a range of partners locally & nationally to try to achieve its misson
- They invest in 49 county sport partnerships spread across country so programmes can be delivered regionally/locally to meet specific local needs
What are county sport partnerships (CSPS)?
(These are local partners)
- National networks of local agencies working together to increase numbers in sport & physical activity
What do county sport partnerships do?
- Work w a number of sport/physical activity providers including local authorities, health organisations, NGB’s, sports clubs & education providers with all a commitment to increasing participation across their network
- e.g. One e.g. is oxforshires CSP ( calls itself Oxfordshire Sport & Physical activity & has set itself a target to make Oxfordshire most physically active county in England
Sport England committed themselves to a £1million National Lottery Exchequer funding in organisations to do what?
- Help more people have a sporting habit for life
- Create more opportunities for young people to play sport
- Nurture & develop talent
- Provide right facilities in the right places
- Support local authorities & unlock local funding
- Ensure real opportunities for communities
What are some national partners that Sport England works with?
- Activity Alliance: National charity dedicated to increasing participation in sport & physical activity among people w disabilities
- Sporting Equals: Promotes active involvement in disadvantaged communities
- Women in Sport: Aims to make being active more attractive to women & girls by breaking down barriers which put them off
In terms of social class what is a national partner for Sport England?
- Street games is working to create new national & local levels to strengthen committment
- Trying to overcome issues surrounding participation in terms of lower socio-economic groups in society
- Street games provides affordable low cost sessions within neighbourhood of communities
In term of disabilities what national partners is Sport England working with?
- SP is working w the EFDS to challenge & change low levels of disability participation in sport to enable people w disabilities to view taking part in sport as a viable lifestyle choice
- In 2015 out of the £150 million of Lottery funding in physical activity Sport England ring fenced £10.2 million to improve their sport on offer for people with disabilitys
In terms of Women how is sport England improving participation?
- Making womens sport a major priority financially across the board in 46 core sport NGBs in which they are investing million of pounds
- In 2015 they introduced ‘this girl can’ in a wave of media publicity- a scheme designed to help overcome barriers to increase participation amongst women & girls
In terms of minority ethnic groups what are Sport England doing to help?
- Invested £1 million into its national partner Sporting Equals to help get more black & minority ethnic communities get into sport
- ## Sporting equals exists to promote ethnic diversity across sport & physical activity & is the only organisation to do so
