Q

Electrolysis

A

Electrolysis is the process in which electrical energy, from a DC supply decomposes electrolytes

Passing a current through substances that are molten or solution means that the solution can be broken down into elements. This is electrolysis, and the substance being broken down is the electrolyte

Electrolysis practical

A

A solution of copper sulfate (CuSO4) contains four different ions: Cu2+, SO4 2-, H+ and OH-

When you electrolyse copper sulfate solution with graphite electrodes (which are inert):
Copper is less reactive than hydrogen, so copper metal is produced at the cathode (you see a coating of copper on the electrode)

There aren’t any halide ions present, so oxygen and water are produced at the anode. (Bubbles of oxygen gas forming)
