Q

Atkinson-shiffrin multi-store model of memory

A

A model of memory which outlines the 3 separate stores of memory (sensory, short-term, + long term) each of which interact through the process of encoding, storage, and retrieval.

Q

Short-term memory

A

Function - Holds info that is constantly being attended to.
Duration - 5-9 (7+/- 2) - improve by maintenance (repeat) or elaborate (attain meaning) rehearsal.
Capacity - 18-30 seconds - improve by chunking (put into larger categories).

Q

Atkinson-shiffrin explanatory power (strengths)

A
  • Distinguishes between different stores.
  • Outlines different capacities + durations of stores.
  • Good understanding of structural process of memory.

Q

Atkinson-shiffrin explanatory power (weaknesses)

A
  • May be considered too oversimplified (STM needs to be more complex).
  • Doesn’t account for individual differences in memory.
