3.3: Concave (Converging) Mirrors Flashcards
(11 cards)
Concave Mirrors
reflects parallel lines to meet
Principal Axis
Line that touches centre of mirror
Centre of Curvature
where all normals meet
Radius of Curvature
distance between V and C
Vertex
where principal axis meets mirror
Focal Point
where reflected rays pass through when incident rays parallel to principal axis
Focal length
distance between V and F
How to Locate Images in Concave Mirror?
Draw a ray diagram that has 2 or 3 incident rays from the top of the object.
Why are 2 incident rays needed to find image?
At least need 2 in order to confirm the location of the image, using the intersection as reference
Rules to Locate Image in Concave Mirror
- when incident ray is parallel to principal axis = reflected through focal point
- when travel through focal point = parallel to principal axis
- when travel through center of curvature = reflected along same path
- when strikes vertex = reflected is same angle
Function of Concave Mirrors
Reflectors and Enlarging: headlights of cars, dentist mirrors, make up mirrors
Solar cookers: food or substance is placed at focal point, sunlight converges to heat it
