Before a product is made, market research helps the designer understand whether there is a target market by gathering opinions from consumers
Secondary data advantages
data already collected
data is free or low cost
huge amount is accessible due to internet
Primary data advantages
data is up to date and relevant
follow up questions can be asked
tailored to specific needs
Primary data disadvantages
a large number of people are needed to be accurate
time consuming and expensive
Secondary data disadvantages
data might not be up to date
data isnt specific
data is available to competitiors
Interviews
conducted face to face or over the phone so interviews are recorded and more detailed
Focus groups
A group of people brought together to share feedback (comments and body language) in order to gain insight of perspectives.
More time for in depth answers but can be difficult to control
Product analysis
Examining how well a product on the market works and how commercially successful it is
Ergonomics
how a person interacts with a product and their environment.
It is important users are comfortable
Anthropometric data
data taken from a large sample of people to determine the most likely size required by the average user
Qualitative data
provides an insight to thoughts and opinions
Quantitive data
generated numerical or measurable data
Design brief
a statement of intent that addresses how a product should solve a problem and satisfy user want and need.
Design specification
to ensure the product meets the needs of the design brief

specification checks, research analysis must be performed throughout the design process to identity and solve problems

outlines how the product will be made
