- The focus was on fulfilling targets as fast as possible so working conditions were unsafe. 2. Slave labour was used, for instance there were 35,000 Kulaks in Magnitogorsk. 3. People were unable to buy consumer goods that they vitally needed, like shoes and clothing. 4. Workers lived in fear as simple mistakes could be a death sentence as workers were classed as ‘saboteurs and wreckers’.

- The apparent ‘success’ of collectivisation, lead some to believe that forced industrialization was possible. 2. Stalin wanted to distance himself from Lenin and build up his own, strong reputation, rather than be seen as just ‘Lenin’s pupil’ which lead him to publicly attack ‘Lenin’s Russia’ in 1929 (on his 50th birthday). 3. Stalin needed to industrialize to be able to re-arm, through the development of iron, steel, coal and oil to create a powerful red army. 4. Once Trotsky was exiled, Stalin could steal his ideas.
