Why did Nicholas II think war with Japan was a good idea?
He thought that a short, popular war would increase his support and distract from Russia’s increasing domestic problems. He chose Japan because Russia had a long history of war with Japan- both territories wanted to expand into China because of vast mineral wealth and warm water ports. He also thought that The Japanese were racially inferior; using derogatory language like ‘The Yellow Peril’ and ‘Little Monkeys’ to describe the Japanese as a race.

Port Arthur, Muckden and Tshushima.
- PORT ARTHUR- The Russians had to surrender the key port of Port Arthur in January 1905- destroying the pacific fleet in the process.
- THE BATTLE OF MUCKDEN- In February 1905, a 300000 strong Russian army was routed at The battle of Muckden.
- THE BATTLE OF TSHUSHIMA - In May 1905, the Baltic Fleet sailed almost halfway round the world, only to be completely annihilated by The Japanese. 25/35 of The Baltic Fleet were sunk.
These defeats were important as they seriously undermined support for The Tsar.
Why was the Russo-Japanese war a problem for Nicholas II in terms of troops?
Because the Russian army was pre-occupied with fighting the war, The Tsar had fewer troops within Russia to be able to control the civil unrest and revolution.
