Structures and functions in a living organism Flashcards
Nucleus
It’s contains the genetic material that controls the cell
Organelles
Tiny structures within cells
Cell membrane
Forms the outer surface of the cell and controls what substances go in and out
Cytoplasm
A gel like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen. It controls enzymes that control the reactions
Chloroplasts
Photosynthesis takes place. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll which is used for photosynthesis
Cell wall
A rigid structure made of cellulose which surrounds the cell and supports and strengthens it
Vacuole
It is large and contains cell sap(a weak solution of sugars and salts) and supports the cell
Red blood cells
Carry oxygen around the body
White blood cells
Defend the body against disease
Xylem tissue
Used for transporting water and mineral salts
Phloem tissue
Used for transporting sucrose and amino acids
Enzyme
A catalyst produced by a living thing
What do enzymes do?
They reduce the need for high temperatures and they speed up chemical reactions in the body ( metabolic reaction )
Substrate
Molecule changed in a reaction
Active site
The part where an enzyme joins onto the enzyme molecule
