3.5.2 Respiration Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the first stage of aerobic respiration?
glycolysis
Where does glycolysis occur?
cytoplasm
What happens in glycolysis?
-phosphorylation of glucose (adding phosphate) using 2 ATP
-production of 2 triose phosphate
-2 triose phosphate are oxidised to produce 2 pyruvate
-NAD is reduced to NADH (x2)
What are the net products of glycolysis?
-2 ATP
-2 NADH
-2 pyruvate molecules
How does pyruvate enter mitochondrial matrix?
via active transport
What happens in the link reaction?
Pyruvate (3C) —> Acetate (2C) —> Acetyl coA (2C)
-NAD is reduced to NADH
-CO2 is released
What is the purpose of the Krebs Cycle?
strips out excited electrons by reducing NAD and FAD and transports electrons to oxidative phosphorylation (where ATP is produced)
Krebs Cycle
Acetyl coA (2C) + 4C —-> 6 carbon molecule —> 5 carbon molecule —> 4C + ……….
What is produced in Krebs cycle?
-4 CO2 molecules
-2 ATP molecules
-6 NADH
-2 FADH
