diaspora
This process is the movement or migration of people who share a national and/or ethnic identity away from their perceived homeland.
How has globalisation impacted people
open borders, deregulation of TNCS has led to an increase in culture and migration
which also increases inequality:
-Low skilled workers in HICs have lost out to deindustrialisation and the relocation of TNC business
-Deregulation and the growing power of TNCs has led to reduced union rights and labour market protections – governments try to woo them
-TNCs relocate as they wish
How has globalisation led to diasporas?
Poland to the UK…
New Polish migrants have joined a long established diaspora community in London. local residents have welcomed new arrivals and their contribution to the local economy and society. Small shopkeepers have visibly courted Polish custom. However, some local people worry that young migrants have increased the birth rate beyond the capacity of the area’s primary schools
Rise of extremism in Europe
-Opening EU borders, migration has taken place – creating enclaves in some European countries e.g polish in London
-Flows of migrants have increased, encouraged by trade blocs, led to widespread hostility and resentment. -Migrants stealing our jobs!
-2017 London bridge attacks. Manchester arena attack – Ariana Grande.
Transboundary water conflicts – Mekong
-Each country who seeks a stake in the river has differing plans on how they want to use it
China wants to build a dam to encourage economic development for the people living upstream but this will negatively impact those living downstream.
China, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia – agreement if changes are to be made all 4 countries must agree.
Vietnams citizens will lose livelihoods if China builds dam on the river.
90% of Laos depends on river for agriculture.
Cambodia will suffer the most as it is located downstream, closest to the mouth.
Attempts have been made in some locations to reduce the spread of globalisation. This could be because…’
-censorship(state Controlled: Where media is run by the state ,State Monitored: Where the media is monitored and censored
