Explain the life cycle

A

Direct

L3 infective

Infect host:

 - Per os
 - Percutaneously
 - Transmammary 

PPP: as short as 2 days

Arrest in somatic tissue - readily available for Transmammary infection

L3 migrate to heart, through lungs to trachea
- Swallowed, migrates to intestine

L1 and eggs with L1 in in found in feces

Describe the Pathogenesis

A

Female adults in small intestine cause inflammation

 - Diarrhea
 - Anorexia 
 - Dullness 
 - Loss of weight

Heavy Transmammary infection
- Death

Infection induces strong immunity

Skin penetration by infective L3 causes an erythematous reaction and urticaria

Dehydration

Neonatal pigs may die before eggs excreted with feces

Immunity in older animals - not clinically affected
