  • Klebsiella pneumoniae • Klebsiella oxytoca • In waters, soil, environment, GI tract • Coliform • Important in nosocomial infections and health care associated infections in humans (sepsis, UTI, respiratory) ( to a much lesser instance in animals)
  • Opportunistic pathogen
  • Non human primates

Klebsiella infections in animals

A
  • Equine metritis, DD with
  • Streptococcus equi ssp. zooepidemicus
  • Streptococcus dysgalactiae ssp. dysgalactiae
  • Escherichia coli
  • Staphylococci
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Taylorella equigenitalis
  • Yeasts
  • Vaginitis, infertility, abortion
  • Transmission: stallion, fomites, vaginal specula & biopsy equipment (vets!!)
  • Umbilical infections in horses
  • Mainly animals with too little colostrum consumed (rather susceptible to a lot of infections…)
  • Omphalitis, and further septicaemiae, arthritis, pneumonia, pyelonephritis
  • Dogs (rare finding)
  • Pyometra
  • Cystitis,…
  • Mastitis in bovines
  • Non-human primates

Treatment:

  • Natural resistance to amoxy/ampi (chromosomal β-lactamase)
  • Susceptible to amoxy+clav
  • High level of acquired resistance
  • Difficult to treat- HAVE TO CLEAN THE UTERUS
