4 Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the structure of the Golgi Apparatus?
Folded membrane
The Golgi Apparatus consists of a series of flattened membrane-bound sacs.
What is the job of the Golgi Apparatus?
Gets vesicles of protein from the ER, processes, and ships proteins where needed
The Golgi Apparatus modifies, sorts, and packages proteins for secretion or delivery to other organelles.
What are vesicles?
Mini-carts that transport proteins around the cell
Vesicles are membrane-bound sacs that carry materials within the cell.
What is the structure of lysosomes?
Contain enzymes
Lysosomes are spherical vesicles containing hydrolytic enzymes for digestion.
What is the job of lysosomes?
Break down dead stuff (food, bacteria, old parts of cell, etc.) and can do programmed cell death (apoptosis)
Lysosomes play a key role in cellular cleanup and recycling.
What is a characteristic of lysosomes?
Animal cells only
Lysosomes are primarily found in animal cells and are involved in digestive processes.
What is the structure of vacuoles in animal cells?
One large vacuole and numerous smaller ones
Vacuoles in animal cells are generally smaller and more numerous compared to plant cells.
What is the job of vacuoles?
Store water, nutrients, waste, etc.
Vacuoles help maintain cellular homeostasis by storing essential materials.
What is the structure of centrioles?
Made of microtubules
Centrioles are cylindrical structures composed of microtubule triplets.
What is the job of centrioles?
Help cell divide by pulling chromosomes apart
Centrioles are crucial for proper cell division during mitosis.
What are cilia?
Shorter, more numerous projections that move like tiny oars
Cilia are involved in moving fluid across the cell surface.
What is the difference between cilia and flagella?
Cilia are shorter and numerous, while flagella are longer and fewer (1-3)
Both structures are involved in movement but differ in size and number.
What is the job of flagella?
Move the entire cell through extracellular fluid
Flagella are typically used for locomotion in single-celled organisms.
Cilia and flagella are associated with which cellular structure?
Cytoskeleton
The cytoskeleton provides the structural framework that supports cilia and flagella.
