What is a tonsilith?
Cluster of small radiopacities due to food calcifications in the tonsils
What does tonsilith look like on pano and CBCT?
Pano - single or multiple RP entities superimposed over the MID PORTION OF THE RAMUS
CBCT - in the tonsils or adenoids surrounding the airway
palatine tonsils - mid ramus
because of location it will probs ghost on the other side
(this is a half pano tho so wont see ghost)
* multiple clusters of RP
* separated RP - more than 1 or just 1
Palatine tonsiliths
A - lingual tonsiliths
B - epiglottis
These will always be in front of epiglottis
Calcifications in here with palatine tonsils
Pharyngeal tonsilihs
Tonsilith on patient right and ghost image on pt left because more smeared looking
- ghosting means they are on the lingual side
Cluster of RP on patient left; ghost on right
Palatine Tonsiliths
lingual tonsiliths
* rare to have clkusters just 1 or 2
Tonsilith patient right; ghost on patient left because smeared
How to treat tonsiliths?
small - no tx
large- tonsillectomy
elderly - if immunocomp. remove because of risk of aspiration pneumonia
What are calcified lymph nodes? What causes them?
