4 - Bio Weapons Flashcards
(37 cards)
What is a biological warfare agent?
A microorganisms or a toxin derived from it which causes disease in humans, plants or animals.
Def. Infectivity
reflects the relative ease with which microorganisms establish themselves in a host species.
* HIGH infectivity = less organism required
Def. Virulence
reflects the relative severity of disease produced by that agent compared to other strains
What variables impact the incubation period?
- Initial dose
- Virulence
- Route of entry
- Rate of replication
- Host factors
Def. Transmissibility
Person-to-person or indirect (e.g. vectors)
What effects the stability of agent
Enviromental factors e.g:
* Temp
* Humidity
* Pollution
* Sunlight
What are some types of biological agents?
- Bacteria (e.g. Rickettsia)
- Viruses
- Fungi
- Toxins
What are some e.g. of bacterial agents?
- Bacillus Anthracis
- Vibrio Cholera
- Yersinia Pestis
What is anthrax
Zoonotic disease caused by Baccilus Anthracis
* The spores can survive for long period
* Mortality rate: 30%
* NOT transmissible
* Incubation: 1-6d (depends on no. spores)
Anthrax symptoms
Gradual onset
* Fever, malaise, fatigue, cough, chest discomfort
* Maybe slight remission period
* Intial symptoms + severe breathing problems 2-3d later > LUNG FAILURE
Protection against anthrax
- Vaccine is available and effective (requires yearly boosters)
- Antibiotics (PRE-treatment)
Treatmentr for Anthrax
Antibiotics:
* Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) or
* Doxycycline (Doxylin)
* + supportive care in a hospital.
What is cholera?
Diarrhoea disease caused by Vibrio Cholera
* Humans get it via consuming food/water with the bacteria
* LOW mortality
* It is transmissible
Cholera symptoms
- Profuse watery diarrhoea,
- Extreme fluid loss
- W/o treatment > death from severe dehydration + shock.
Cholera protection and treatment
- Oral Vaccine (50% protection for 6 mon.)
- WHO solution (MIXTURE of salts, glucose and antibiotics)
What is the Plague?
Zoonotic disease caused by Yersinia Pestis bacteria
* Mortality: 100% (pneumonic) 50% (bubonic)
* VERY transmissible
What are the types of plagues?
- Bubonic (bites)
- Pneumonic
- Septicemic
Incubation periods for plague types
Bubonic plague 2-10d whilst pneumonic 2-3
Plague symptoms
- 1st symptoms come fast, malaise, high fever, tender lymph node(s)
- Progress: circulatory collapse and hemorrhage
- Death > internal bleeding or cyanosis
Protection and treatment for PLAGUE
- Vaccine (NO protection for pneumonic, last 6 mon.)
- Antibiotics (Doxycycline, Streptomycin, Chloramphenicol)
What are some e.g. of viral agents?
- Variola (smallpox)
- VHF
- Corona
What is smallpox
Disease caused by Variola virus
* Mortality: 35%
* It is transmissible
* Incubation: 12d
Smallpox symptoms
- 1st symptoms: malaise, fever, rigors, head/backache
- Skin eruption 7-17d later (RASH > CYSTS > PUSTULES)
- Pustules form crust > fall off and scar
- Fever MAY reappear ~7th day (after onset of rash)
Protection and treatment for Smallpox
-
Vaccine (contains Vaccinia virus, protection for 10y)
Vaccine can be used as treatment if caught early
