4-chemical changes Flashcards
(16 cards)
method to produce pure dry sample of soluble salt copper chloride from acid and metal oxide
- react hydrochloric acid with copper oxide
- warm conditions + suitable container
- add copper oxide in excess, stir
- filter off excess powder
- pour filtrate into evaporating basin
- use water bath to heat gently
- when u heat it all the stuff goes away to leave pure substance
- leave to cool/crystallise
what is reduction=
gain of electrons

Gain
what is oxidation
loss electrons
during electrolysis what happens at the negative electrode
reduction, ions gain electrons
oxidation of chloride equation
2CL——> Cl2+ 2e-
what do metals want to do
react
lose e
full outtershell
form+ ions
the more reactive a metal is the more…
vigorous reaction
easily loses e- -> ions
what are + ions called
cations
most reactive metals
K, Na, Li,Ca,Mg
least reactive metals
Zn, Fe, Cu
metal+ water
metal hydroxide+ hydrogen
solid. liquid. g
observations when lithium is placed into water with universal indicator
fizzing= hydrogen gas
blue-purple= hydroxide alkaline
metal+ acid
MASH
metal+acid - salt + hydrogen
magnesium + hydrochloric acid
Mg + HCL -> MgCl + H2
