(17 cards)
what’s the formula for buck minster fullerene
C 60
why does graphite conduct electricity
delocalised electrons
carry electrical charge+ move around
what’s crude oil?
crude oil is a finite resource found in rocks
mixtures of large number of carbons
what’s alkanes other form
C2H6
what’s fractional distillation?
crude oil is heated to a high temperature, causing it to vaporize. The vapor is then passed through a series of trays or columns, with each tray or column being at a slightly lower temperature than the previous one. As the vapor cools, different hydrocarbons condense into liquids at different temperatures, allowing them to be separated into fractions. These fractions include gases, naphtha, kerosene, diesel fuel, lubricating oil, and residual fuel oil, among others. Each fraction has different properties and uses, and can be further processed into useful products for a variety of purposes.
what’s cracking?
when hydrocarbons are broken down into smaller more useful molecules
which process can be used to produce potable water from salty water?
distillation
how is fresh water made potable? (drinkable)
fresh water is filtered to remove solid objects, then its sterilised using U.V/Chlorine/Ozone. it is then potable/drinkable
how is waste water(sewage) made potable/ drinkable
waste water requires screening, to remove large objects. it’s then put into a sediment tank where it separates into sludge and effluent for hours. the sludge and effluent need to be treated. sludge is anaerobicly digested and forms fertiliser and biogas. effluent is aerobicly digested which can then be released as fresh water but still needs processing as fresh water to make it potable.
what’s a hydrocarbon
compound only containing Hydrogen and carbon
what is a hydrocarbon
compound/ molecule containing only hydrogen and carbon
what is formula for alkanee
CnH2n+2
how many bonds does carbon form
