4 - Plastic Frame Alignment, Heating, & Lens Insertion Flashcards

1
Q

What is standard alignment/truing a frame?

Q

What are the 3 steps to check the horizontal alignment of a plastic frame? see diagram in powerpoint

A

1)Place a ruler across
the back of the frame
at the top of the pads,
if any.
2)If there are no pads,
there may be a point
where the sculptured
shaping of the bridge
areas ends.
3)Both endpieces should
be equidistant from
the straight edge
when it is aligned
horizontally

11
Q

How do you adjust a plastic frame to fix horizontal alignment issues 3 steps?

A

1) Heat plastic first
2)Once warm, gently bend the frame in desired direction
3)Bend beyond the point that you want it to stay and hold it there until it cools.

Q

What is face form + negative face form?

A

When frame curves inwards at the bridge to form to the faces natural curve - face form
When the frame is bent outwards at the bridge opposite to face form - negative face form

Q

How do you fix negative face form?

A

1)warm the bridge
first
2)grasp the frame by the
lenses and eyewire
with thumbs on
the inside and
bend the frame.
3)Move the desired amount

Q

What is x - ing?

A

The frame front may
be twisted so that the
two lenses are out of
coincidence with each
other.

16
Q

What is checked for in vertical alignment? 3

A

x-ing
face form
Variant/vertical planes

17
Q

What needs to be adjusted first when addressing glasses out of alignment

A

The bridge
The x-ing

18
Q

How do you know if they are in variant plane? see diagram in powerpoint

A

The lenses are in
not in the same plane or variant alignment.

19
Q

When the lenses are in variant planes how can the lenses and bridge appear?

A

Lenses can appear parallel
Bridge can appear in a wavy or S shape (see diagram in powerpoint)

20
Q

What is the Open Temple Spread?

A

The angle that each open temples forms in relationship with the front of the frame

21
Q

What is the angle of a normal temple spread?

A

94-95 degrees

22
Q

Review 5 methods of adjustment if temples are spread too far

A

SEE TABLE 8.1 PAGE 109 SOD

23
Q

Review 4 methods of adjustments if temples are not spread enough

A

SEE TABLE 8.1 109 SOD

24
Q

How do you check for Temple Parallelism?

A

Do a flat surface touch test - place the glasses upside down on a flat surface

25
Q

What should you see when you do a flat surface touch test?

A

4 points of the frame should touch a flat surface. see diagram

26
Q

What are the 4 steps if the temple parallelism is not equal?

A

1)check for a bent endpiece
2)check for loose or broken rivets or loose hidden hinge
3)check for bend in the temple shaft
4) if none of the above is wrong, hinge needs to be bent

27
Q

When looking at the alignment of the bent down portion of the temples what are we checking? 2

A

1) Check for equality in the downward bend.
2) Check for equality of the inward bend.

28
Q

When checking the temple fold angle what do we do/look at?

A

Fold temples to closed position and observe angle formed at the temples cross.

29
Q

What are two methods to adjust the temple fold angle?

A

1) Use of Angling Pliers
2) Use of Finger-Piece Pliers

30
Q

What should the temple fold angle look like? 2

A

Temples should be parallel to one another or form slight angles from parallel.
Angles should be symmetrical and cross at exactly centre of the frame inline with the centre of the bridge.

31
Q

What is step 1 of standard alignment/truing a frame? and what are we checking for? 2

A

Horizontal bridge alignment
-rotated lens
-skewed bridge

32
Q

What is step 2 of standard alignment/truing a frame? and what are we checking for? 3

A

Vertical bridge alignment (4-point touch)
-x-ing
-variant planes
-face form

33
Q

What is step 3 of standard alignment/truing a frame? and what are we checking for? 2

A

Open temple Alignment
-temple straightness of shaft
-temple angle when open for symmetry

34
Q

What is step 4 of standard alignment/truing a frame? and what are we checking for? 4

A

Temple Parallelism (flat surface test)
-Bent end piece
-Loose hinge
- Bend in the temple shaft
-If none above apply bend the hinge

35
Q

What is step 5 of standard alignment/truing a frame? and what are we checking for? 2

A

Alignment of the bent-down portion of the temple
-equality of downward bend
-equality of inward bend

36
Q

What is step 6 of standard alignment/truing a frame? and what are we checking for? 2

A

Temple-fold angle
-central crossing of the temple shafts when folded
-Fold that permits the insertion of the spectacle into a standard case
