4.1 Reactivity of metals Flashcards
(11 cards)
What happens when metals react with oxygen? What type of reaction is it?
Metal oxide is produced; oxidation.
What happens when metal reacts with water?
Metal hydroxide and hydrogen is produced.
Reduction in terms of oxygen
When the reactant loses oxygen.
Oxidation in terms of oxygen
When the reactant gains oxygen.
Reactivity
The tendency for a metal to form positive ions.
Reactivity series
Please - Potassium
Stop - Sodium
Loudly - Lithium
Calling - Calcium
My - Magnesium
Crazy - CARBON
Zebra - Zinc
In - Iron
Her - HYDROGEN
Class - Copper
She - Silver
Grunts - Gold
Reaction of K, Na, Li, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Cu with water and dilute acid.
Potassium, Sodium, Lithium: (These are highly reactive and react readily with water)
Calcium: (Reacts with water, but less vigorously than the alkali metals)
Magnesium, Zinc, Iron: (React with steam and acids)
Copper: (Unreactive with both water and dilute acids)
Metal extraction.
- Un reactive metals found in the earth as native metals.
- Most metals are found as compounds that require chemical reactions to extract the metal.
How are metals less reactive than carbon extracted?
Can be extracted from their oxides by reduction with carbon (example of displacement).
Oxidation in terms of electrons
When the reactants lose electrons.
Reduction in terms of electrons
When the reactants gain electrons.
