4.2 Physical and Human Processes Flashcards

Q

What types of weathering are found in the uplands

A

The uplands were hollowed out by glaciers to from basin. Large u-shaped valleys that were eroded by ice that sometimes contain misfit rivers that are too small to have created it. Lots of rocks are impermeable in the uplands streams erode away these rocks and form gullies. Freeze-thaw weathering occurs on the back of gullies this causes rock falls and scree slopes

Q

What types of weathering are found in the lowlands

A

Large ricers meander on impermeable clay widening the valley floor. Heavy rain leads to flooding the water deposits silt on valley floors which cause flood plains. Dry valleys were formed during glacial periods streams flow in the permeable chalk

Q

Compare misfit rivers and dry valley locations characteristics and formation

A

Dry valleys are found in the lowlands. They are valleys with no streams visible streams only flow in the permeable rock they were formed during the glacial period. Misfit rivers are found in the uplands and occur in u-shaped valleys that were formed in the glacial period sometimes small rivers flow in these valleys called misfits but are clearly too small to have created it

Q

Explain how glaciers have effected both landscapes

A

Glaciers were much more common in the uplands as shown by the amount of basins and u-shaped valleys. Glaciers were much less common in the lowlands as the only examples are dry valleys

Q

Explain 2 ways humans have affected the upland landscape

A

Humans have affected the upland landscape through agriculture people have cleared forests for farming of crops animals. And forestry through management of deforestation and afforestation

Q

Explain 2 ways humans have affected the lowlands

A

Humans have affected the lowlands primarily through settlements the lowlands is were a lot of the uk’s settlements are found

Q

Compare which landscape has been affected more by humans uplands or lowlands

A

I would say that the uplands have been affected most by humans as all of the land is covered by some way or another lots of deforestation has had to happen provide the uk with all of its crop dairy and meat farms. Lots of the uplands are also populated by forestry which is constantly being managed by deforestation and afforestation
