Bio 2 Flashcards
What are the three domains
Bacteria, archaea, and eukarya
Bacteria and archaea are
Prokaryotic: lack organelles bound by a membrane
Domain Eukarya
Kingdoms: Protista, fungi, plantae, and animalia
And are eukaryotes
Characteristics of Prokaryotes
Features: unicellular, diversity of shapes, average size 1-10 um (microscope)
Organelles: no nucleus, few membrane- bound organelle, no cytoskeleton, cell wall are gram- positive and gram- negative.
Gram- negative bacteria
Cell walls have a thin layer of peptidoglycan & has an extra layer of lipids on the outside
- stain colour: red or pink
Gram- positive bacteria
Thick layer of peotidoglycan complex in cell walls and single layer of lipids
- stain colour: purple
Kingdoms archaebacteria
Contain DNA
- another chromosome called plasmid
Chromosome
General chromosomal control and form all the normal function
Plasmid
Protects the bacteria, special defense material
Domain Archaea
- found in harsh environments (undersea, volcano, hot springs)
- cell without peotidoglycon
- has three group:
Methanogens
Thermoacidophiles
Extreme halophiles
Methanogens
- live in anatomical environment (no oxygen)
- obtain energy by changing H2 and a CO2 gas into methane gas
- found in swamps digestive track on animals
- Break down cellulos for herbivores
- produce marsh gas
Extreme Halophiles
- Love salt, live in very salty water (to make energy)
- found in the dead sea, great salt lake etc.
- generate ATP
Thermoacidophiles
- Live in extremely hot and acidic water
- sounded hot spring, the kainic then and in cracks on the ocean floor
Domain
Broadest taxonomic group
