management of aproximal caries Flashcards
What is a class lll cavity?
Anterior approximately cavity
What is a class ll cavity?
Posterior, approximately cavity
Where does caries develop in a class ll?
Below the contact area
How is a class ll cavity detected?
Radiographically as well as clinically
How is a class lll cavity detected?
Easier o detect clinically - shadowing
How is approximal caries diagnosed?
Visual inspection
Transillumination - especially anteriors
Bitewing radiographs
Where should you access anterior restoration?
Palatally or lingually.
Try to leave as much labially as possible
When can you access labially?
Overlapping teeth
If caries close to labial surface
When to intervene re. Approximal caries?
If reached ADJ
if obviously cavitated
If visible on BW radiograph
What can be used in cavity wall to give extra retention ?
Grooves, slots in prep walls
What is the purpose of a matrix band?
To retain material in cavity during restoration
Restore contact point with adjacent tooth
How should an MOD cavity be prepared?
Each side prepared as separate cavities
Occlusal part kept narrow as possible
Wedge matrix band at both sides
What are the advantages of tunnel preparations?
Conservative to tooth tissue
What are the disadvantages of tunnel preparations?
Technically difficult
Marginal ridge prone to fracture
No always good access to caries and ACJ
Describe how to deal with approximal root caries
Accessed Buccally
Generally filled with GI
