What are the requirements for Trappist Beer?

A

Brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks or under their supervision.

Not intneded to be a profit-making venture; the income covers the expenses of the monks and the maintenance of the building and grounds. Whatever remains is donated to charity.

Q

During what period did Koningshoeven not display the Trappist logo? Why?

A

1999-2005
In 1999, and LLC was set up as a subsidiary of the commercial brewer Bavaria to take over day to day operations, which caused a dispute with the Internatonal Trappist Association.
Koningshoeven was granted the right to display the logo again after a long review and settlement, which inlcudes more active control of the brewery by the monks.
