What are the books of prime entry

What is the function of the sales journal
Lists all invoices for credit sales
What is the function of the purchase journal
Lists all invoices for credit purchases
Also called the returns in journal
What is the function of the sales returns journal
Lists all the credit notes received by the business

What is the function of the cash book
Used to record bank receipts and bank payments, as well as cash discounts allowed and received
The left side of the cash book is used to record
- A positive bank balance
- Amounts received by the business (e.g from customers)
- Discounts allowed to customers that have paid quickly
The right side of the cash book is used to record
- A negative bank balance
- Amounts paid by the business
- Discounts received from suppliers for quick payment
What is the function of the General journal
Used to record non-routine transactions
What are the types of ledgers
- Receivables ledger
- Payables ledger
- General ledger
What is the function of the receivables ledger
Includes T accounts for each credit customer
For customers it shows: invoices, credit notes, payments, discounts and the amount owed by that customer
What is the function of the payables ledger
Includes T accounts for each credit supplier
For suppliers it shows:
invoices, credit notes, payments, discounts and amount owed by that supplier
What is the function of the general ledger
Includes T accounts for every item that will be on the financial statements
Recording invoices nd credit notes
Each invoice or credit note will be entered in the receivable or payable ledgers
Each invoice or credit note will be entered in one of the books of prime entry
