5. Collective and connective action Flashcards
(6 cards)
what is DNA?
Digital Networked Activism (DNA).
Positive claims of contemporary social movements?
- because of how citizenship has been transformed→ self actualizing shift of citizenship these movements are actually the only possible form of collective action. Is this the only way to mobilize people in a highly actualized society, especially with young people → easier to mobilize ?
Negative claims of contemporary social movements?
the idea that this is just hacktivism and it is detrimental to the existence of social movements and what they can actually achieve. → Digital Networked Activism (DNA). That is not productive regarding its political impact, it’s actually making people feel good because they feel like they participated in something but actually they did nothing.
Hacktivism
It’s when people use hacking techniques (like taking down websites, leaking information, or disrupting digital systems) as a form of political protest or social justice action.
–> To expose injustice, disrupt powerful institutions, or make a political statement.
Slacktivism
It refers to low-effort online actions that make people feel like they’re helping a cause, but that don’t lead to real change
what makes DNA distinctive ?
- The use of easily personalised claims
- these movements give everyone an opportunity to step in
