5 groups of living organisms Flashcards
(6 cards)
state the 5 kingdoms
plants, animals, fungi, protoctists, bacteria
plants
-multicellular
-their cells contain chloroplasts
-carry out photosynthesis
-produce cellulose that cell walls already made up of
-store starch
-transports sucrose high is sometimes stored in fruits
animals
-multicellular
-do not contain chloroplasts
-unable to photosynthesize
-feed on animals and plants
-animal cells don’t have a cell wall so their cells change shape so they move from place to place
-movement is caused by the coordination bay a nervous system
-they store carbohydrates in their cells as a compound called glycogen.
fungi
-mushrooms and moulds - multicellular
-yeasts - unicellular
-dont contain chloroplasts
-they don’t photosynthesize
-they have cell walls made from chitin
protoctists
- mixed group of organisms that don’t fit into the other categories. amoeba looks like an animal cell which lives in pond water. these are known as protozoa. other protoctists have chloroplasts and carry out photosynthesis so are more like plants. these are called algae. most algae are unicellular but seaweeds are multicellular.
bacteria
small single celled organisms. they are surrounded by a cell wall which protects the bacterium to keep the shape of the cell.it has no nucleus it has a loose cytoplasm.
