movement of materials into and out of cells Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
Diffusion definition
A
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Down the concentration gradient.
2
Q
factors affecting diffusion
A
- The concentration gradient. Diffusion happens more quickly when there is a steep concentration gradient. When there is a big difference in concentrations between two areas.
- The surface area, the volume ratio. A larger surface area and proportion to the volume will decrease the rate.
- The distance. The rate is decreased if the distance over which diffusion has to take place is greater.
- The temperature. The rate is greater at higher temperatures. This is because the high temperature provides the particles with more kinetic energy.
3
Q
active transport definition
A
Active transport is the movement of substances against the concentration gradient, using energy from respiration
4
Q
Osmosis definition
A
Osmosis and cell cells is the net movement of water from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution across a partially permeable cell membrane
