Diffusion definition

A

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Down the concentration gradient.

Q

factors affecting diffusion

A
  1. The concentration gradient. Diffusion happens more quickly when there is a steep concentration gradient. When there is a big difference in concentrations between two areas.
  2. The surface area, the volume ratio. A larger surface area and proportion to the volume will decrease the rate.
  3. The distance. The rate is decreased if the distance over which diffusion has to take place is greater.
  4. The temperature. The rate is greater at higher temperatures. This is because the high temperature provides the particles with more kinetic energy.
