cell structure Flashcards

1
Q

nucleus structure and functions

A

The nucleus is the largest organelle in the cell. Nearly all cells have nucleus. The nucleus controls the activities of the cell. It contains chromosomes, which carry the genetic material or genes. Genes control activities in the cell by determining which proteins the cell can make. The DNA remains in the nucleus, but the instructions for making proteins is carried out of the nucleus to the cytoplasm.

Q

cytoplasm structure and functions

A

The living material that makes up a cell. its where chemical reactions occur. It has a texture rather like sloppy jelly somewhere between a solid and a liquid. its a complex material made up of many different structures.

Q

cell membrane structure and functions

A

it surrounds all cells. it forms a boundary between the cytoplasm of the cell and the outside. its partially permeable. it controls the movement of some substances and its selective permeable.

Q

cell wall structure and functions

A

layer of non living material that is found outside the cell membrane of plant cells. it is made by a carbohydrate called cellulose. cellulose is a tough material that helps a cell keep its shape and is one reason why body of a plant has a fixed shape. plant cells absorb water producing an internal pressure pushing the adjacent cells giving the plant support.

Q

mitochondria structure and functions

A

organelle found in the cytoplasm of all living cells. in cells that lots of energy is needed, there are many mitochondria. they carry out respiration, by releasing energy that the cell can use. most of the energy in respiration is released in the mitochondria.

Q

chloroplasts structure and functions

A

green parts that are in leaves. chloroplasts absorb light energy to make food in the process of photosynthesis. they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll

Q

vacuole structure and functions

A

large central space surrounded by a membrane. its a permanent feature of a cell. it is filled with a watery liquid called cell sap which is a store of dissolved sugars and other solutes.
