Mechanism of Action

A

Anticholinergic (parasympatholytic) agent appears to inhibit vagally- mediated reflexes by antagonizing the action of acetylcholine, the transmitter released from the Vagus nerve

Indications

A

Bronchial asthma and/or reversible bronchospasm associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Not to be used as a single agent - must be used in combination with a beta-agonist

Contraindications

A

Known hypersensitivity to the medication. Hypersensitivity to the drug Atropine

Precautions

A

Use with caution in patients with CHF, heart disease, hypertension, and Glaucoma. May worsen the condition of glaucoma if it gets in the patients eyes. Having the patient close their eyes during administration may prevent this.

Adverse effects

A

Dry mouth, cough, nervousness, palpitations, trembling, nausea, and sputum production increases.
