Who is someone Pope Francis refers to as a source of his ideas?
He quotes the Eastern Orthodox Patriarch.
What are 5 physical changes that have happened to the Earth?
1) Pollution is happening.
2) we are creating green house gases, caused by heavy use of fossil fuels.
3) Rise in methane due to rise in sea level.
4) We have a throw away culture. Nature recycles, why don’t we?
5) Microorganisms are killed off, endangering the base of the food chain.
6) There is a loss of biodiversity.
What does the Pope want to emphasize and what does he want to reject?
Emphasize: Human beings, endowed with intelligence, must
respect the laws of nature and the delicate equilibria existing between the creatures of this world.
Reject: Human life is grounded in three fundamental and closely intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbour and with the earth itself. According to the Bible, these three vital relationships have
been broken, both outwardly and within us. This rupture is sin.
What is the common understanding of technological inventions which increase our power over the planet?—in particular what do people inevitably see as progress?
We believe that any increase in our power is progress.
What is the common belief about how technological innovation will affect environmental challenges?
We look at technology through an “undifferential paradigm.” We need to see that technological products are not neutral.
