Q

What happens if blood glucose concentration is too high?

A

The pancreas produces the hormone insulin that causes glucose to move from the blood into the cells. In liver and muscle cells excess glucose is converted to glycogen for storage.

Q

Type 1 diabetes
- what is it
- How is it treated

A
  • a disorder in which the pancreas fails to produce sufficient insulin. Characterised by uncontrolled high blood glucose levels. Means that blood glucose can rise to a level that kills them.
  • insulin therapy- - several injections of insulin throughout the day, usually at mealtimes. Ensures that glucose is removed from blood quickly once food has been digested, stopping levels getting too high
  • People with type 1 also need to limit intake of foods rich in simple carbohydrates and take regular exercise.

Q

Type 2 diabetes
-what is it
-risk factor
-treatment

A

-Body cells don’t respond to insulin produced by the pancreas, so blood sugar level can rise to a dangerous level.
- obesity
- carbohydrate controlled diet and exercise regime

Q

What happens if blood glucose concentration is too low?
