Picket line - are protests that take place outside the workplace, generally associated with a strike
Work bans - a ban is a refusal to work overtime, handle a product, piece of equipment, process or even a refusal to work with particular individuals
Work to rule - in this action employees refuses to perform any duties that are additional to the work they may be normally required to perform

Causes of conflict

Protected industrial action

A

Refers to action taken by either party to a dispute that has been approved by the fair work commission
- considered a legitimate tactic in pursuit of claims in a new enterprise agreement and will usually occur during the process of negotiating the new agreements.

Unprotected industrial action

A

Refers to the action that has not been approved by the fair work commission
- considered unlawful, takes place before the expiry date of the previous agreement.

Negotiation

A

Lest formal method, of a dispute of resolution. Involves direct discussions between the parties without the involvement of external third parties.

Mediation

A

A more formal method to resolve a dispute, involves the third assistance of a third party which assists the parties in dispute to work towards their own agreement. They will not usually offer suggestions, or solutions preferring to allow the parties to develop the agreements in their own terms

Grievance procedures

A

Are a formalised set of steps whereby the employee and employer can resolve matters relating to complains about wages, hours, working conditions or disciplinary actions.
Complaint being presented to supervisor, then to middle management, then to top management, then to conciliation and arbitration until the issues is resolved.

A

Being the national independent workplace relations tribunals they can help parties resolve work place disputes in a variety of ways, particularly thought conciliation, mediation and arbitration.

A

Legal action before the courts is open to any party involved in or affected by industrial action. Taking legal action would be considered the “last resort” when all other avenues have been exhausted.
