A

The azygos vein ONLY DRAINS THE RIGHT SIDE!! It drains the intercostal, right renal, and right ascending lumbar veins. It empties into the superior vena cava.

A

The hemiazygos vein drains the lower intercostal, left ascending lumbar and left subcostal veins. It crosses around the level of T9 vertebra and empties into the azygos vein.

The accessory azygos vein drains the upper intercostal veins, connects the mid 3 or 4 intercostal veins and either empties directly into the azygos vein or into the hemiazygos vein.
