cranial Nerves (Lecture 19) Flashcards

1
Q

Cranial Nerves

A
  • anterior to posterior
  • may have one or more of the three functions:
    • sensory=special ( coming from specialized sensory organs ex) eye or nose) or general (pain, touch, temp)
    • somatic= skeletal muscles
    • parasymphatic= regulation of glands, smooth muscles, cardiac muscle. Voluntary semantic/ muscle under voluntary control. Autonomous/ rest and digest

Proprioception= positional information of body parts. Important for balance.

Cranial Nerves

A
  • olfactory (I) smell
  • optic (II) eyes
  • oculomotor (III) muscles of the eye
  • Trochlear (IV)
  • Trigeminal (V) 3 branches
  • abducens (VI)
  • facial (VII)
  • vestibulocochlear (VIII) auditory
  • glossopharyngeal (IX) tongue
  • vagus (X) wanderer, goes to places of the body no other Nerves go

Q

CN III

A

Oculomotor=
motor: moves eye back and forth and up and down. 4 out of 6 Nerves innervated by the oculomotor.
Parasympathetic: constriction of pupil, shape of lens. # 3 constricts pupil and changes shape of lens. Looking at something in the distance changes shape of lens.

Iris: color anterior side and pupil = smooth muscle inside of eye.

Q

CN VII

A

Facial:
Sensory: taste/ anterior 2/3 of tongue
Motor/somatic: facial muscles, posterior belly of the digastric ( hyoid to mastoid). Stimulates almost all facial muscles
• parasympathetic: 2 of 3 salivary glands, lacrimal glands ( tear gland)

Vagus:
Sensory: taste, back of mouth, pharynx, larynx, thoracic and abdominal organ.
Motor: muscles of larynx (voice box), most muscles of pharynx
• parasympathetic: thoracic and abdominal organs= digestive tract, stomach churning, something moving through intestines

Q

CN XII

A

Hypoglossal: motor/ tongue muscles

Paralysis of muscles with a resultant impairment of speech and deviation of tongue to one side of the mouth could indicate damage to the hypoglossal nerve.

Q

Points to remember

A
  • cranial Nerves are part of the PNS
  • carry sensory or motor information or a combination and function in parasympathetic nervous system
  • cranial Nerves I, II, VIII sensory only
  • cranial Nerves III, IV, VI, XI, XII motor only
  • cranial Nerves III, IV, VI, XI, XII are motor ( although also function for proprioception
