This story of the first ever murder has been very influential in literature. The story concerns the children of Adam and Eve. Both brothers offer a sacrifice to God but because Abel’s is accepted and his is not, Cain murders his brother in a fit of rage

The Sheep and God as the Good Shepherd of his people

In the Old Testament, God is depicted as the shepherd of his people - perhaps best known from Psalms 23:1-6 “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want”. In the Gospels, Jesus describes himself as the “Good Shepherd” who cares for his sheep (often understood to mean the Church)
