sound Flashcards
what type of waves are sound waves?
longitudinal waves.
can sound waves reflect off surfaces?
yes, we hear them as echos.
what is good at reflecting sound?
hard, smooth surfaces are good at reflecting sound.
what is good at absorbing sound?
soft, rough surfaces are good at absorbing sound.
how do we detect sound?
The eardrum inside is connected to three small bones.when vibrations in the air make the eardrum vibrate, the vibrations are passed through the three small bones (called ossicles) to the cochlea. Signals are passed from the cochlea to the brain through the auditory nerve, and our brain interprets these signals as sound.
what do microphones contain?
A diaphragm , which is similar to an ear drum .
what is amplitude?
amplitude is the maximum height of a sound wave from it’s resting position. The greater the amplitude, the greater the sound.
what is wavelength?
the distance between the crests of two waves next to each other.
what is frequency?
the number of waves per second. The higher the frequency, the closer together the waves are and the higher the pitch.
what is sound measured with?
Hertz/ Hz
What is the range of humans hearing?
20Hz - 20,000Hz
what is the name of the sound that is higher than 20,000 Hz?
Ultrasound
can humans hear ultrasound?
no.
