what immediate effects does exercise have on the respiratory system?
Your breathing rate and the tidal volume (the volume of air breathed in or out)
what effects does regular exercise have on the respiratory system?
strength of diaphragm and intercostal muscles and vital capacity (volume of air that can be forcibly exhaled after inhaling fully)
what does asthma affect?
the bronchioles
what can happen to your airways if you have asthma?
your airways can become inflamed, swollen and narrowed, and excess mucus is produced.
what happens during an asthma attack?
the lining of the airways become inflamed, fluid builds up in the airways and the muscles around the bronchioles contract that restricts the airways.
what are the symptoms of an asthma attack?
wheezing, a tight chest and difficultly breathing.
what can be used to help treat asthma symptoms?
asthma relievers that relax and open up the airways, which can be in the form of an inhaler.
what harmful substances does tobacco contain?
tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide.
what does tar cause?
cancer of the lungs, mouth and throat.
what can nicotine cause/ lead to?
it increases heart rate, blood pressure and makes the blood vessels narrower than normal. this can lead to heart disease.
what does carbon monoxide cause/ lead to?
carbon monoxide take the place of oxygen in the red blood cells, which reduces the amount of oxygen that blood can carry. Meaning that the circulatory system has to work harder, making heart disease.
what is a drug?
a substance that has an effect on the body.
what are the two types of drug?
medicinal drugs are taken by people in pain or are suffering a disease.
recreational drugs are taken by people because they like the effects on their body.
what does a depressant do?
it slows down the messages in the brain and along the nerves.
what are some effects depressants have on the body?
feelings of well-being ,lowered inhibition, slowed, thinking ,slowed muscular activity and a distorted view of the world, or hallucinations
