What do Local Anesthetics do

A
  • Block nerve conduction of sensory impulses
    * Block Na channels in CNS which prevents action potential propagation
    * High doses can block motor impulses
  • Sensation cannot be transmitted to the brain
  • Cause vasodilation
    * Often given with epinephrine to vasoconstrict area and extend duration of action
    * Duration determined by redistribution
